Affogato al Caffè is one of the simplest and most elegant Italian desserts: cold vanilla gelato “drowned” with hot espresso.
The magic is in the contrast — creamy gelato, strong coffee, and that beautiful moment when the espresso melts into the ice cream, creating a rich, velvety sauce.
Perfect after dinner, during summer, or anytime you want a dessert that feels fancy but takes only minutes.

U.S. Measurements
- 4 scoops vanilla gelato
- 2 shots hot espresso, about 2 ounces total
- 2 teaspoons sugar, optional
- Whipped cream, optional
- Dark chocolate shavings, optional
- Crushed amaretti cookies or wafer cookies, optional
- Coffee liqueur, optional, for adults only
Instructions
1. Chill the glasses
Place two dessert glasses or small cups in the freezer for a few minutes. This helps the gelato stay cold longer when the hot espresso is poured over it.
2. Prepare the gelato
Add 2 scoops of vanilla gelato to each glass.
3. Make the espresso
Prepare 2 fresh shots of hot espresso. For the best flavor, use strong Italian espresso.
4. Pour and serve immediately
Pour one hot espresso shot over each glass of gelato.
Serve right away, while the espresso is hot and the gelato is still cold and creamy.
5. Add toppings, if desired
Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, crushed amaretti cookies, or a wafer biscuit.
For an adult version, add a small splash of coffee liqueur before serving.
Tips for the Best Affogato
Use real vanilla gelato if possible. It gives the best creamy texture and classic Italian flavor.
Pour the espresso right before serving. Affogato should never sit too long, or the gelato will melt completely.
Do not use weak coffee. The dessert needs the bitterness and aroma of strong espresso to balance the sweetness of the gelato.
For a more elegant presentation, serve it in a tall dessert glass with a small spoon and a wafer on the side.
Variations
Chocolate Affogato
Use chocolate gelato instead of vanilla for a richer dessert.
Hazelnut Affogato
Use hazelnut gelato and garnish with chopped toasted hazelnuts.
Amaretto Affogato
Add a splash of amaretto liqueur and top with crushed amaretti cookies.
Extra Creamy Affogato
Add a small spoonful of whipped cream on top before serving.
Storage
Affogato al Caffè must be served immediately.
It is not suitable for storing because the hot espresso melts the gelato quickly. Prepare each serving fresh, just before enjoying.
