Garlic Bread: The Italian-American Classic You Need to Try

The History Behind the Popular Appetizer

Garlic bread is a classic appetizer found on almost every Italian-American restaurant menu.

While its widespread popularity in the United States and beyond makes it seem like a quintessential Italian dish, it is, in fact, not as common in Italy as many might think.

In fact, garlic bread as served in restaurants around the world has roots in Italian-American cuisine, which evolved from the ingenuity of Italian immigrants in the United States. 🌍🍞🧄

In Italy, the concept of toasted bread with olive oil and garlic goes way back, especially in the form of bruschetta, a simple yet delicious peasant dish. Bruschetta, typically made with stale bread, olive oil, and a dash of garlic, is a rustic, flavorful treat that dates back to the Etruscan era.

It’s one of the most beloved traditional Italian appetizers and can be traced as the precursor to garlic bread. 🌿🍞

However, the Italian-American version of garlic bread is quite different—typically made with baguette-style bread, butter, garlic, and sometimes cheese.

It became an easy and affordable way to create a flavorful snack, especially for the many Italian immigrants who arrived in the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 🍞🧄🧀
