NONNA’S SUNDAY SAUCE (RAGU’ DELLA DOMENICA)

A Heartwarming Tradition in Every Italian Home

Sunday sauce — or ragù della domenica — is more than just food. It’s a tradition, a ritual that fills Italian homes with the aroma of slowly simmering tomatoes and savory meats.

In Italy, Sunday lunch is sacred, and the sauce bubbling away on the stove is the star of the table.

Every region has its own beloved version:

  • Naples (Ragù Napoletano) – Large cuts of beef or pork, simmered for hours in tomato sauce until melt-in-your-mouth tender.

  • Bologna (Ragù alla Bolognese) – Finely minced meat cooked slowly with soffritto, tomato, and milk, served with fresh tagliatelle.

  • Sicily (Ragù alla Siciliana) – Pork, beef, or lamb, sometimes with eggplant, peas, or hard-boiled eggs, all in a rich tomato base.

  • Apulia & Calabria – A slightly spicier ragù with sausages or lamb, often featuring a hint of chili pepper.

Today’s recipe is Nonna’s Sausage Ragù — a quicker but still deeply flavorful Sunday sauce that works beautifully with pasta, gnocchi, or even creamy polenta.

Why Nonna Loves This Recipe

  • Full of Flavor, Less Time – Ready in under an hour without losing that Sunday magic.

  • Perfect with Any Pasta – Clings beautifully to every shape, from rigatoni to pappardelle.

  • Comfort in Every Bite – The aroma alone will gather everyone around the table.
