These Scalille—also known among Italian-Americans as Scaliddi, Scalidde, or simply Calabrian Honey Fritters—are one of the most cherished Christmas sweets in Calabria.
Their delicate spiral shape symbolizes a “little ladder,” representing the ascent of Jesus into heaven, a beautiful meaning passed down through generations.
Lightly scented with anise and cinnamon, fried to a perfect golden color, and covered in warm honey, they bring the aroma and joy of a true Calabrian Christmas to your home.
Why Nonna Loves This Recipe
Because it brings back the magic of Christmas in Calabria — the warmth of the kitchen, the scent of honey filling the house, and generations of hands shaping spirals together.
It’s simple, meaningful, and made to share with the whole family.
